I mailed my letter to an IRS office in Cincinnati on January 28th, certified mail. The Return Receipt was stamped as "Received" on January 30th at an IRS office in Covington, Kentucky.
Today I received a letter from the Cincinnati office. It begins:
"Dear Taxpayer:
Thank you for your correspondence received Feb. 09, 2009.
We have not resolved this matter because we haven't completed all the processing necessary for a complete response. However, we will contact you again within 45 days with our reply. You don't need to do anything further now on this matter."
The letter then goes on to suggest that I continue making scheduled payments if an installment agreement is in place, or even to make payments without a formal agreement to reduce penalty and interest charges. It closes by saying:
"We apologize for any inconvenience we may have caused you, and thank you for your cooperation."
It is signed by one Retha Zulager, Department Manager, ACS Support, Collection Operations.
